Health Benefits of Garlic

Garlic is one of the healthiest herbs available. The health benefits of garlic are heralded like no other. Garlic has been known to lower cholesterol, fight heart disease, assist in leveling insulin for diabetics, reduce allergies, and lower blood pressure just to name a few!

Garlic doesn't just assist in your health. The health benefits of garlic aren't the only benefits of garlic! It is a mosquito repellent, tick repellent, and head lice repellent. As a child growing up on a farm in New Hampshire, my mother was very diligent in using garlic in just about everything she made. She was ahead of her time as well.

My brother and I were the only ones NOT to get head lice when there was a breakout in the school. We were also NEVER sick. I am fortunate enough to have had a mother so in tune with the benefits of garlic!

To this day, when I go to the doctor for anything(which is rare), and they take my blood pressure, they comment on how it is perfect. They even ask if I am an avid jogger or runner. I tell them no. Although I have always been athletic, I hate running!

My mom seemed like a nut to everyone in our small town, but whatever! It didn't take long before neighbors were asking her what she was doing different with her kids. The conversation usually started with her outlining the health benefits of garlic. She would gladly share her garlic recipes with her friends.

Some people still thought she was nutty for being so obsessed with garlic health, but she won a lot of them over. The ones who crossed over begrudgingly usually derided the odor of fresh garlic, so they used garlic pills instead, which is fine. Just look at the popularity of garlic pills now!

Now that we know the health benefits of garlic, let me share with you my favorite garlic recipe. It is garlic chicken.

• 2 teaspoons crushed garlic

• 1/4 cup olive oil

• 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs

• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

• 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast

• Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

• Warm the garlic and olive oil to blend the flavors. In a separate dish, combine the bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. Dip the chicken breasts in the olive oil and garlic mixture, then into the bread crumb mixture. Place in a shallow baking dish.

• Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, until no longer pink and juices run clear.

Here are a few tips for making this dish healthy. Use extra virgin olive oil. You can omit the parmesan cheese because this contains most of the fat calories in the dish, but if you are Italian like my wife, that's a no no.

Also, use boneless and skinless chicken breast. For the troopers who are already married, or in a committed relationship, make sure to use fresh garlic, and chop it yourself. The fresher the garlic, the more potent the health benefits of the garlic.

In closing, it doesn't matter how young or old you are. The health benefits of garlic are so far reaching, anyone will benefit. I want to reiterate. I have never had allergies, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. I don't think its coincidence either. It is never too late to reap the rewards of the health benefits of garlic. Decide how you will integrate it into your diet today.
